Case study – City of Limassol

The improvement of approaching the area for buses, bicycles and pedestrians and the creation of a friendly environment, which guarantees the improvement of the quality of living in the town.

limassolThe municipality participated the past 12 years in several European projects concerning the sustainable development and the improvement of the mobility system. Through those projects, apart from sharing experience with similar cities all over Europe, several actions were taken as the creation of a sea front park which include a bicycle path almost covering the whole length of the agglomeration, the implementation of pedestrian and bicycle ways in many parts of the town, especially in the center, the improvement of the buses etc. Participating in this particular program we are expecting a further improvement of the mobility situation in town, which influence on the energy consumption and the green strategy for the town. This case study will then be focused on transport planning. Limassol wants to grasp the opportunity and through this projects’ training, learn from experts and other regions and design specific cases for integration and implementation in the regional development master plan.

The Municipality of Limassol aims to achieve the following objectives during the SUSREG project:

  • The development and the implementation in the planning legislation of a tool of communication and analysis which links urban, environmental and energetic data to support urban planning and management.
  • To study further the energy consumption (fuel) from the traffic and to revise the mobility network in order to control the traffic flow, especially in the central part of the town.
  • To reduce the energy consumption in buildings (Energy Certificate), and to encourage the “green” development and the use of alternatives energy resources.
  • To underline the benefits of the sustainability
